Today our attention is drawn to the interior of a small kitchen located in the house of the architect Margaret Aptor, in Maryland. The mistress of the mansion, by her own admission, felt trapped when she had to cook a meal or to host guests, so uncomfortable and cramped was the space.
The previous owners had organized a narrow passage between the kitchen and the adjacent dining room but the intricate curved Peninsula, in the corner which was equipped with stove, made the interior closed no matter what.

Before: the kitchen seemed to be a very closed isolated space. In addition, the cabinets of cherry wood filled her light orange tone of the whole interior, which was very tiring for the eyes.
Reinforced is the feeling of the terracotta tiles on the floor, which proved to be very impractical: it is easy to get dirty, and to wash the mud from the joints was almost impossible. Margaret also did not like the fact that the guests sitting in the dining room, were forced to contemplate the refrigerator, not to admire the view of the backyard garden.
Upton completely reshaped the space, making it a Central element of the island to a depth of 60 inches. It’s quite spacious, it nevertheless provides occupants the opportunity to move freely.
Margaret says that she most likely wouldn’t have to design so narrow island to their customers, but in the case of her own kitchen, the convenience of planning was paramount. Open oven door and the dishwasher at the same time was impossible, but now Upton often cooks meals with her husband Kyle, and thus they do not interfere with each other.
It was decided to move the fridge is to put it at the other wall. In addition, the kitchen has another window, so the interior became brighter, and the view of the garden in the back yard now opens the eyes in all its splendor.
The sink remained in the same place, while the cooking surface and refrigerator, as already mentioned, has found a new home. The couple decided to spend in the kitchen the gas and at the same time set of progressive ventilation system with a downward flow. Special communications are brought directly to the kitchen and island through floor and exposed brick wall.
Wanting to expand the possibilities for storage, Upton designed built-in cabinets and arranged the Seating area in the window opening. Now it is a comfortable bench with ample drawers under the seat. Appeared half-wall that creates a false doorway separates the kitchen from the living room.
Margaret likes to use this technique when making old houses, considering that completely open-plan is not suitable for their architecture.
Designed design your own, Upton saved a significant amount. In addition, new cabinets were not made “from scratch”: it is adapted to the particularities of specific food components headset that the owner ordered from your usual supplier. The contractor, working with Margaret for many years, agreed to accept from her a fee only for materials.
Maybe someone would think that and the updated interior is hardly ideal. But Margaret has achieved that result, had hoped that undertaking this project, and that, in her opinion, the most important thing.
